Then I saw this post on Get Rich Slowly talks about the cost of clutter. Cost? I'd never thought about that.

First, when you can't find your stuff, you end buying duplicates. Yes, I've done that.

When you have more stuff than space, your things get stored badly and damaged. Yup, done that also.

When your stuff is disorganized, you miss deadlines and fees can run up. Not so much for me. I hate fees.

Lots of folks rent storage space for the stuff that doesn't fit in their homes. Or they buy bigger homes than they need to hold their stuff. And I just got a bigger garage with a store room.

Clutter can encourage allergens and dust and that's not good for your health.

Plus, clutter keeps you from working at your best. Stuff demands attention.

It really does take a village

I've moved! But I'm going to move to a first floor apartment. Right now, I have to climb three flights of stairs to get from my garage to my apartment. When I moved in two years ago I thought it would be good exercise plus I could enjoy the beautiful view.

After lugging bags of groceries up those stairs for two years, I'm thinking there must be a better way to exercise! Besides, the chemo isn't helping my ability to climb stairs.

I can remember a time when I thought moving was fun... an adventure! New rooms to arrange, new neighbors, new decor items to buy. Health magazine says that there is a tenth of a gram of feces in every pair of underwear. Really? That means you get E.coli on your hands when you move the clothes from the washer to the dryer.

The washer and dryer should be at 150 degrees to kill bacteria. Most organisms die in the drying cycle. Wash underwear separately and wash whites with bleach. Transfer wet laundry to the dryer quickly and dry for at least 45 minutes (or until load is fully dry). Wash hands after doing laundry. Run a cycle of bleach and water after laundering underwear.

I'll never look at washing underwear the same.

Germy places in your home

I was reading an article in Health magazine about the germiest places in a home and came across some surprising (and disgusting) facts. A typical sink drain has over 500,000 bacteria persquare inch. Seventy percent of the sponges and towels you use to clean have microbes such as E. coli.

What to do?
After you rinse or cook food, clean the sink, counters, and faucet with soap and water or an anti-bacterial cleanser. Never leave a sponge around to use the next day...this can create a germ breeding ground. Instead, put the sponge or brush in the dishwasher and dishrags in the washing machine.

Disinfect the sink and drain twice a week with a solution of one tablespoon bleach with one quart water. Ann Taylor had a sale after Thanksgiving that was the real deal.... 40 percent off your entire purchase...everything included. The next three days it was restricted to 40 percent off one item.

I found a soft sweater wrap and silky t-shirt. They also had great black dresses that would be perfect for lots of occasions. And they still have those pearl, rhinestone, and ribbon necklaces that Dale Coker mentioned earlier. Also an extra 40 percent off sale items.

Sales like this pop up quickly and I never have time to tell anyone. And sometimes they are online only.

On the other hand, I was looking at computers and was told that I could pay it out with no interest on all computers with a little logo on them. I glanced around and saw the little logo everywhere. So I took out a new credit card and picked out a computer, only to find out that was not the correct logo. Only three models (all over $1700) qualified for the deal. I was looking in the $300 price range! They recommend fruitier, less tannic red wines such as Beaujolais, Burgundy, new world Pinot Noir, Zinfandel or Merlot, Côtes-du-Rhône. For the white wines they recommend off-dry versions of Riesling, fresher more fruit forward versions of Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. I got an Argyle Pinot Noir for $19. And maybe a bubbly wine to start!

I've also read that Thanksgiving is not necessarily the time to splurge on a wine. With all the strong competing flavors, get something good but save the bottle of Château Mouton Rothschild Pauillac 2005! This is a time to enjoy good conversation and laughs with family and friends!

EAST (East Austin Studio Tour) favorites

There are so many artists showing their work it is hard to know where to start. Besides, everyone has different tastes so it's hard to guide someone on such personal choices. But here are a few that I have to mention.

George Barry makes metal scultures from found objects such as birds from nuts and bolts. Or a life-size, operational figure on a bicycle. Very unusual and creative.

The artisans at Mendoza's Bella's Artes handcraft earrings, necklaces, and bracelets from silver and stones. Very reasonably priced.

The Pump Project on Shady Lane is a complex with many artists. One of my favorites was Erika Jaeggli. Love her still lifes and beaches!

I also love the porcelain dinnerware by Sunyong Chung. They look like watercolors.

Happy Hunting!

Report from HEB

Sunday afternoon I stopped by the HEB on Bee Caves Road for a few things I forgot the day before. Over an hour later I emerged having eaten my way through the store! No dinner for me!

The station at the Cafe on the Run counter had turkey & potatoes (good), cranberry chutney (very good), green beans (good). The meat department had ham (good), roast beef (very good) with horseradish sauce, and mashed potatoes. The scallops (not my favorite) were in the fish department and behind it were egg nog (2% and yummy) and cookies. And then truffles (wow!) and coffee. And then....pumpkin ice cream and chocolate mint chip ice cream (great). I nearly forgot...pumpkin pie also! What a day!

I guess they were featuring their Thanksgiving foods....They sold me. If they do this again, go try the goodies.

Earlier in the day, I had wandered into Williams Sonoma and they were serving turkey & dressing made from focaccia (very good), mashed potatoes and gravy (great), and green bean casserole (good). If this keeps up, I'll put on the pounds before we even get to Thanksgiving!

Wine Night!

I love Tuesday night when it a wine class with Jeremy Parzen! Tonight we talked about and tasted the wines of Veneto. If you don't remember my first blog about Jeremy, he has a Ph.D. in Italian and has traveled, studied, and tasted throughout Italy. His blog, Do Biancho, is great fun for an approachable look at wines. By the way, he will be at Vino Vino with Kermit Lynch on Monday, Nov. 9 to introduce Kermit's new CD, Man's Temptation. (But you need reservations; call 512-465-9282 ) To preview: http://www.amazon.com/Mans-Temptation-Kermit-Lynch/dp/B002JODUN4

But back to the wine. We started with Bisol Prosecco. I love this! Light in body (11-12 percent alcohol) and great with food, especially seafood. This is not a cheap substitute for Champagne, but a great food wine. $18

I bought a Soave Classico by Inama. Remember when Soave was a cheap bulk wine? No more! This one had bright acidity and is a great value for $15.

We moved to the reds with two Zenato Valpolicellas. Higher alcohol content here. These wines come from near Lake Garda and enjoy good drainage and ventilation from the lake. In the $25 range.

But the treat was a Valpolicella Classico Superiore from Quintarelli, a legend in Italian winemaking. $62 (at Austin Wine Merchant)but this was a special purchase; it retails for more! We're talking handwritten labels and a winemaker who won't release a wine until it meets his high standards.

The classes have not been "stuffy" and Jeremy makes wine even more interesting by sharing his experiences in Italy. These have been wine & food classes, not just wine tasting. Thanks, Jeremy!

Outing to Nordstrom Rack

I'm sorry; I posted this a couple of days ago, but something ate it so I'm posting it again.

You knew I would make it to Nordstrom Rack soon! I love a discount but some discount stores carry secondary lines. The store had already been open for several days when I got there, but it was still crowded.

They carry lots of good brands but I don't think all of this merchandise is carried in their stores. They had lots of Sofft shoes (which are a necessity due to my early days of pointy shoes and high heels) but they fit sort of weird, perhaps why they were here. But I could spend a long time just browsing the shoes! Lots of shoes.

Separate racks for designers such as Nanette Lapore separates and Alberto Makali tops, but again I'm not sure that these are from the store. I did see some great leather gloves that were very reasonable.

I would definitely go again. I think you could find some good deals but you have to be lucky also.... or find out when they get shipments!

While I was out that way, I stopped by Ann Taylor. Dale Coker has been telling us about the this season's classic looks there. They had some basics like a black skirt and white blouse for $39 each. They looked a lot more expensive!

This is going to be a great Thanksgiving!

Guess what! My son, Scott, is coming home for Thanksgiving. This is a big deal..my kids live in Arizona and New York so they don't get home often. Scott and I are going to research new restaurants, exhibits, etc. so I'll have lots to tell you about!

Also, I think I'm going to break down and get a new computer. If you've tried to email me or Pat's Picks you may have had trouble. Lots of emails are going in a black hole. I hate setting up things like a new computer..... sounds simple but it never is. But I'll have expert assistance with Scott here.

By the way, I saw Dan and Linda Baker, jewelers from Dallas, at the International Gem & Jewelry Show. They have beautiful things... love to look and hear the stories about how they develop the pieces. Anyway, they are thinking of having their Master's Art Show in Austin. That would be great! The artists are selected to be the best in their fields.

Jewelry on 5th

The Art of Jewelry opened Friday night, and, not being one to miss any jewelry show, I was there. It was a wonderful chance to see one-of-a-kind creations from award-winning artists. Intricate metal designs, beads, gems and the artists were there to explain how they created the pieces.

I spotted some earrings that reminded me of some I bought years ago. Sure enough, it was the same artist only now she has a full line of earrings, cuffs, necklaces & more. Christi Klug cuts delicate shapes in metal for unique shapes. One of her designs is above (center). Check the Website http://www.arton5th.com/Jewelry-Perm/Preview/preview-AOJ.htm for a peek at some of the other designs.

The jewelry was modeled by 5'11" gorgeous models in strapless, black cocktail dresses. I'm not sure they would look the same on a 5'4" slightly pudgy woman in jeans!

Italian Wine 101

Hurrah! I was on the wait list for the first Italian wine class at the Austin Wine Merchant and I got in! Jeremy Parzen teaches the six-class series. Jeremy has a Ph.D. in Italian from UCLA and is a published author and translator of Italian works. In addition, his articles on food, wine and food history have appeared in national cooking magazines.

He is at his best in a class like the ones at Austin Wine Merchant. This is not a wine geek class but a very approachable look at the food and wine of some of the major producing regions of Italy. When talking about the structure of the wine, he calls the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo a Friday night wine...good with pizza. The Campania Aglianico is a Saturday night wine... for steaks and hearty stew.

And....he has kept all wines in a reasonable price range. All were $13 - $25. These are beautiful wines, many from small producers.
There are five more classes: Tuscany (Oct 13, $37.50), The Other Piedmont (Oct. 20, $25), Piedmont's De Facto Cru System (Oct. 27, $37.50), the Enigmatic Wines of the Venato (Nov. 3, $37.50), and Italian Wine & Civilization (Nov. 10, $25)
Cheers!

Jewelry in 95 degrees

It may have been 95 degrees but I was out there at Pecan Street Festival trying on jewelry. The Gilded Giraffe was there with their shell and silver pieces. I had to buy the pearl earrings with silver beads imprinted with tiny dragonflies. Unfortunately, they don't have a Web site.

I also discovered Jessica Weiss from Knoxville. She does unusual, primarily dangling, earrings with stones. Her Web site is http://www.jessicaweissjewelry.com/ Don't be shocked...the designs on theWeb site are usually in 18K or 22K gold, that is, expensive. They run several hundred to several thousand dollars. But at Pecan Street she had silver and gold plate. A pair of earrings would run $30 - $80. Very delicate leaf shapes, branches or circles with turquoise, black onyx, pearls. She said you could order and she would ship, but the pieces at the show are not on the Web site. Don't know how that would work.

A similar look is Windy Mink http://www.wendyminkjewelry.com/ , a NYC jeweler who is featured in numerous magazines and occasionally on Gilt.com, the designer discount Web site. She has a sale going on right now on her blog.
The earrings at the top of this post are Windy Mink's.

Not your ordinary library

Last Sunday I visited Laura's Library, the new Westbank location on the southeast corner of Bee Caves and Cuernavaca. This is not what I was expecting! It is what you always dreamed a public library could be.

Lots of new titles.. books and CDs....and plenty of comfortable seating to browse. I checked out a set of CDs from The Great Courses on music theory. I had wanted to order it for some time but it is very expensive. Now I can enjoy it!

If you love to cook, they have a collection worthy of the best bookstore. It's not a big library but well chosen selections.

I especially love the nooks (some with leather chairs!) to read in a soothing atmosphere. And did I mention the views? Amazing. So comfortable and homey.... better than my home!

They are open M & T Noon-8, Wed-Fri 10-6, Sat 10-4, and Sun 1-6.

The real devil

I saw The September Issue last weekend. I loved it! It's a documentary about the production of the September issue of Vogue magazine, featuring Anna Wintour, of course. In case you don't know, The Devil Wears Prada was based on her and her role as editor of Vogue.

Loved seeing how they put together a large issue... behind the camera at photo shoots, discussions of photo quality, etc. And to top it off, when I got home The Devil Wears Prada was on TV!

Before I close, Victoria wants you to know that the service around here is deteriorating. She has always preferred her water straight from the bathroom faucet, but now she wants it from the tub faucet. I heard a meow echoing in the bathroom and found her in the tub looking longingly at the faucet.

But if it runs too fast, it gets her feet wet, which is a problem. And it's not easy to get a tub faucet to trickle just right. Hurrah! Over the weekend I got a massage at Lake Austin Spa. It was wonderful...the woman had been trained at M.D. Anderson and knew exactly the pressure needed for cancer patients, no heat, etc.

If you know someone who is or was recently in treatment for cancer, tell them about Pamela at Lake Austin. I could stand straighter after she had worked the scar tissue.

My physical therapist had suggested massage for the scar tissue but I was afraid to go to someone who didn't understand my surgery. The muscles aren't where they used to be! It goes against my natural inclinations...cooking, that is, but I really do want to eat better. Today I made Lentil Soup from French Women for All Seasons. I've made it before....I think.

It's really easy to make, but it requires lots of the "C" word (chopping). It says it serves four, but I'd like to see the size of those four people. I freeze a lot and store the rest in containers for lunch.

Oops, I was talking to my mother and forgot to add the tomatoes. Oh well, how much cooking could they need. I'll just add them at the end. Maybe a chocolate chip to settle my nerves.

Back to storage issues: I put as much as I could in glass containers. But (and this is a big but) there is a lot left over. I saw someone store liquids in baggies so...... It's still sort of hot so I put the baggies in the fridge. Just a couple of chocolate chips to make things more pleasant.

When I checked the baggies they had leaked and run down the fridge and settled under the vegetable bin. Yuk! How many paper towels does it take to soak up that stuff? A handful of chocolate chips helps.

Here is the recipe; it really is good!
2 qts vegetable stock
1/2 lb lentils
2 T olive oil
1 med onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
1 T chopped parsley
1 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes
salt & pepper
Bring stock to a simmer & drop in lentils. Heat oil in skillet and add onion, garlic, and celery. Cook until golden, 3-5 minutes. Add parsley & tomatoes; cook 8-10 minutes. After lentils have been cooking for 35-40 minutes, add onion mixture to pot & cover. Simmer until lentils are soft, 5-10 more minutes. Season with salt & peper.

Finally! A place to turn my Ferrari loose (I'm joking!)

There is no real point in this blog other than I thought it was really interesting. I met one of my neighbors recently, and he was on his way to Nice to stay at a friend's villa. Yeah, well, I'm on my way to San Antonio and I'm thinking of stopping at the snake farm!

Anyway, I asked him what he did that he would be in Nice. Among his many projects is Driveway, a training track in East Austin. It is used to train EMS drivers, homeland security employees, and law enforcement. It needs to be special since last year I had just had my first round of chemo on my birthday and it was a doozy! I barely remember that day (and probably a good thing).

Then I realized that I don't really care what I do as long as I'm with people I love and are positive, faithful friends and family. I used to think of lots of places I wanted to go, but they don't seem as wonderful if I can't share the experience.

Keeping up with tests

I'm trying to get back on schedule with my checkups with my local doctors. You know, mammogram, colonoscopy, etc. I remember reading in Health magazine about the tests you should have at each stage of your life. Worth repeating!

In your 30s:
Gyno check, Thyroid check (if you've had a baby)
Heart check
Skin check
Eye exam

In your 40s:
Gyno check, Diabetes test
Heart check, Mammogram
Skin check, Vitamin D test
Eye exam

In your 50s:
Gyno check, Diabetes test, Thyroid test
Heart check, Mammogram, Bone-density scan
Skin check, Vitamin D test
Eye check, Colonoscopy

Excuse me... what about 60s, 70s, etc.? I guess they're the same as 50s but I'm not sure. You know, I always read those articles about how to dress in your 20s, 30s, etc. but it's depressing when they stop at 50. What do they think we wear... flannel pajamas? But it is nice to look more like I remember me!

I waited until after my first checkup because apparently they don't want people with some kinds of cancer to use hair color. But not the cancer I had, and......the reports were all good. I thought they would be, but just being at M.D. Anderson again and going through all the tests made me anxious. They even cancelled the tests on the second day.... unnecessary.

And to make it even better, I stopped at a shop on the way out of Houston, and they had just marked down their summer clothes 75 percent. Yes, her birthday really is July 4!

Yippee! Despite terrorism, recession, arthritis and asthma, America and I celebrated our respective birthdays on July 4.

Although I am one year away from celebrating three-fourth of a century worth of birthdays, I remain grateful that my mother had the wisdom to give birth to her only child on a day that the entire nation observes.

July 4 is the quintessential American holiday, and it requires little effort to celebrate in style.

No presents to buy, no turkey to cook, no eggs to dye and no roses to send.
Fly an American flag, cook some wieners, cut a watermelon, light a Roman candle, and before you can say, "The British are coming," it’s a red, white and blue Fourth.

This year I celebrated with friends in Sun City where Pat was looking great after her long battle with cancer, and our hostess was gloriously happy in her new home.

Although I have received some great presents, the best gifts are seeing a good friend recover her health, another happy, children’s phone calls, grandchildren’s text messages, silly cards from far away friends, unexpected e-cards, and a Skype equipped laptop so I may see, as well as talk, to my loving husband as his job takes him around the world.

Each year, I also am grateful for the military men and women whose service and sacrifice have made it possible for all Americans to wake up on July 4 in the land of the free.

I washed my I Phone!

The I Phone is not a cold water wash item. Not even if the detergent is eco-friendly!

I was in a hurry and pulled the sheets off my bed and dropped them in the washer quickly. I thought I heard a thump but decided I must have bumped that thingie in the middle that turns. I went back into the bedroom to grab my glasses and the I Phone so that I could leave. Where is the phone? Like a flash it hit me..... that thump was my phone.

I screamed and ran back to the washing machine. It was still filling with water, and I fished around in the water. Yep, wrapped up in the sheets was the distinct outline of an I Phone.

I took it immediately to the AT&T store, water running out of it. They don't fix IPhones but recommended a repair shop down the street, which was, of course, was closed since it was Sunday. I went to the Apple store, which was willing to sell me a new phone for $199. Keep in mind that if you buy the same phone with a contract it's only $99. But my phone is so new that my contract is too new to qualify. And, of course, the warranty doesn't include water damage.

OK, I can live without a cell phone. Of course, I still have to pay $100 a month for the service whether I use it or not. I have nothing to lose at this point so I took the phone to the repair shop on Monday. "Maybe we can save it; maybe we can't."

They called me back the next day.... my phone has been saved! I can't believe it; they saved my phone. And the charge? $35!

So I must tell you about these guys: They work out of the Finish Line Car Wash on Bee Caves Road. It's called Celltech and it's just two guys at a counter but do they ever know cell phones!

2900 Bee Caves Road
327-0007

Suit Shopping

Margaret and Mike go shopping: Guest blog from Margaret Patterson

My husband and I went suit shopping recently. I kidded her about it, but now I recall that when she was the age I am now, she still looked good in a size 8 swimsuit.

Unfortunately, in the case of my figure and my husband’s physique, it would take more than turning over the hourglass to force the sands of time up instead of down.

A Visit with Porsche

I visited my ancient horse for the first time since my surgery in March. She may be old but she's strong so I was afraid to visit until I was sure my back could handle her.

Now we both have back issues: she's sway backed and I'm numb in places! Anyway, she looked great, especially for a lady of her years. She was glad to see me but not overwhelmed. Now I know why... a friend had offered to look after her while I was in treatment. Well, she has been washing, grooming, and walking her.... and giving her special treats. I am really going to have to step up my game to keep up with that! Thanks, Dana, it meant a lot to know someone was checking in on her.

It was really good to be out in the open air again. There was a light breeze despite the fact that it will get to 100 degrees this afternoon. And the grass is still green enough to be a treat for Porsche; later in the summer we'll have to look longer to find a green patch.

When I rub her forehead she rests her chin on my shoulder. I remember when she was young and frisky I was afraid of her... and she knew it. But now we have both mellowed.

And They're Off!

This is a guest post from Elaine Douglas.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever hear myself say “I hope to get my braces off by my 64th birthday.” But I did. Many times. And it almost happened. They actually came off a couple of weeks after the birthday. How did I get here? Definitely a F(requently)A(sked) Q(uestion)!!

About two years ago when I was in for my (almost) semi-annual appointment, my dentist decided to develop a “long range plan treatment plan” for me. Actually it is quite encouraging to begin a long-range plan when you’re nearly ready for Medicare. Anyway, one of the first recommendations was orthodontia. Most of us probably remember from junior high school: metal bands, regular tightening of the brackets, wax to prevent the wires from poking the inside of our mouth, etc. Not fun!! But this time it was a lot different. I didn’t spring for the more expensive Invisalign braces. I figure they aren’t truly invisible so I might as well not try to kid anyone. Today the brackets are applied directly to the teeth, skipping the awful metal bands. Fortunately, each adjustment only resulted in a day or two of minimal pressure, never any actual pain. It always amazed me how many adult patients I saw in the waiting room, and how many people I encountered in other places who were also in braces. I guess I just never noticed before. This journey has been worth it. Whether you had braces a half-century ago and have noticed some shifting of your teeth, or just always wished you could straighten them, I can definitely recommend considering seeing an orthodontist.

Finally, one week ago the braces came off, I got my retainer, and now I’m ready for the next step in my long-range plan. This will involve “restorative work”, ie a little cosmetic dentistry. But why not? The kids are grown and flown (certainly with memories of their own braces) and I guess now it’s my turn again. I have fond memories of incredulous stares at the 45-year high school reunion. I must have been the youngest looking one there with braces and (now) glasses! It was like I was in junior high all over again.

But for the 50-year reunion in a few more years, I hope to have contact lenses, or at least snazzier frames. Now about these few extra pounds. This will really require some dedication.

The Big Sink Cleaning

I cleaned the kitchen sink today. Not just the quick wipe around the edges, but the disposer, every little part of the faucet, scrubbing the stainless with a real stainless steel cleaner.

I was inspired by the healthy housekeeper. Laura Dellutri has a Website at www.healthyhousekeeper.com with lots of organizing and cleaning tips. She suggests rinsing your sink with bleach and water after you've cooked with raw food. Did you notice recently that they never found the cuprits in several food poisoning cases? Instead food manufacturers recommend cooking food at higher temperatures.

Well, I'm thinking I should be more careful with food preparation. I've also discovered that Victoria has developed some bad habits while I've been in Houston. She feels free to get on the kitchen counters!

Laura also suggests you use paper towels when handling raw meat. If you wipe your hands on a cloth towel you may be spreading germs. Clean counters with a disinfecting wipe that says it kills 99.9 percent of germs & bacteria. Clean sponges by soaking them in a bowl of water with one teaspoon of bleach. Or microwave 2-3 minutes in bowl covered with water (Make sure the sponge doesn't have a metal scrubber side.)

And, of course, wash your hands! A lot.

What you need to know when caring for the elderly

If you care for an elderly family member, do you know what documents you would need in an emergency? My resume needed to be updated. I felt I needed interview tips. I got lots of tips from the classes at the Texas Workforce Commission on Airport Blvd. Kathy L taught the classes and told me about the Launch Pad Job Club.

I am hearing about lots of young adults getting laid off now and they might benefit from this. You only have to attend one meeting to have access to their (and here is the important part) job listings. As people, especially Kathy, hear about openings they are posted on this Yahoo! based club. Quite a few of the listings are tech-related but some are government (what I was looking for) and other areas.

So glad to be back

I am so glad to have finished my cancer treatment(9 months!)and I am so glad to be back writing. Many thanks for all of the prayers. I have spent a lot of time at M.D. Anderson undergoing chemo, radiation, and surgery. I met some wonderful caregivers and patients there. The staff at M.D. Anderson are incredible! We are so lucky to have this facility in Texas. And cancer patients are some of the bravest (& most determined) people in the world.

My doctors are very pleased but I understand that there are no promises in life. Such joy, hope and thankfulness with blessings shared all around. The attached "amateur" pictures are from that portion of the trip. Adi_Nefas was the first completed well visit, and Seyabo was the second. We were totally exhausted by the end of the day and emotionally drained. It was an easy sleep!

Tuesday morning we traveled back to Addis. We visited the Glimmer office and then two afternoon meetings with John Halvorson at LWF and Zerihun Desta, Development Director for Mekan Yesus. Both started a little tense, but in the end they were good meetings. At least we are communicating openly and have a path of cooperation. Time will tell how well it will work. I felt good about the outcome of the meetings. More when I return.

We had dinner last evening with some of the Glimmer team to get to know them better. A very enjoyable evening. My respect continues to grow for the Tameru and the whole Glimmer team. They have their values truly aligned with the people they serve. So great to see it in action.

We are off to Kellum later today and should be back in Addis Saturday afternoon. Tameru has a relationship with the Mekane Yesus church in that area as some of Glimmer's early projects were done in cooperation with them. We will meet them on Friday after visiting potential new fresh water points on Thursday.

Blessings to you from the people of Adi-Nefas, Seyabo and Ketema"

Dick and Meredith

For $3,500, Water to Thrive provides a first water well for 400 Ethiopians.
That's $7 per person (2 lattes or 2 bottles of water at your local airport)
100% of contributions go to changing lives. She works for the U.S. embassy in Saudi Arabia. Wow! How many people can say that! Anyway, it is so interesting listening to stories of their life in the Kingdom.

As someone who does virtually no cooking, I was surprised to learn that they seldom eat out. If you are invited to dinner it means to their home.

Recently, the embassy has hosted President Bush, Dick Cheney, and a long list of other dignitaries. Saudi Arabia gave the U.S. a rare and endangered oryx. I had to go home and google oryx to see what they look like. (It is a large antelope with swept-back horns. See photo.)

What would a celebration be without T-shirts and mugs? But trying to get them on short notice in Saudi Arabia is another thing! Apparently, they don't print up T-shirts for all occasions like we do. She promised to send the logo that her husband designed for a US-Saudi event.

Mamma Mia!

I saw Mamma Mia over the weekend and loved it! I'm not embarrassed to admit that I have been going around humming old ABBA songs. I know some reviewers think it is simple and not realistic, but, you know, I'm not sure it is more unrealistic than a rich guy dressing up like a bat and fighting crime. Of course, I still think film history was made by Pillow Talk with Doris Day.

Best of all, Meryl Streep dances and does huge jumps on a bed. I'd like to think that could be me but I was squirming in my seat with a pinched nerve in my back. By the way, remember the steroids they put me on for shingles? I'm back on them. But if I ever get rid of the back pain, I'm going to try doing a saddle jump on my bed and climbing on tables singing "Take a Chance on Me." I'll let you know how that works out.

Introducing: Victoria

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_q8lBV-IGhcM/SH1n0aYXJrI/AAAAAAAAACk/Xuzk59DEP-0/s320/victoria.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223445292952004274" />

Several people have asked me who Victoria is. Victoria is my cat and editorial assistant!

She looks big in the photo but she actually is very small. You can see that she sits on the back of the chair and watches me write.

Victoria and I go for walks in the evening. She goes on a leash! Sounds weird but she puts up with it. She's a rescue kitty and part of the deal is that she cannot be allowed to wander outside.

I also have an ancient horse... 33 years old. She's not ridden any more, but that's OK because I don't know how to ride anyway! My daughter (the jockey) used to compete with her in hunter-jumper shows.

If any of you own horses, you'll know what I mean when I say that my economic stimulus check went directly to the barn! Who knew you had to "float" horses' teeth. Just because you're not good at one type, you might be great at something else.

1. Bodily-kinesthetic- These are the athletes. Finely tuned bodies. Definitely not me.
2. Verbal-linguistic - Great speakers such as Martin Luther King and Kennedy. And me? Please! Let's move on.
3. Logical-mathemetical- Technology leaders and Albert Einstein. I don't really even understand what E=MC2 is. I don't think so.
4. Spacial - These are the engineers and architects. No, but that's OK; there are lots more to choose from.
5. Intrapersonal - Highly self-aware persons such philosophers and psychologists. Well, we're getting closer but if I'm so self-aware I wouldn't be listening to all these CDs.
6. Interpersonal - Empathize with others & communicate well, extroverts - politicians, teachers. Maybe...but not really
7. Musical - Now we're getting cold again.
8. Naturalistic - Great sensitivity to nature. The last time I went camping I was 10 years old and got chiggers.

Was this exercise supposed to be inspirational? Now I know that of eight forms of intelligence, I have none. I'll just have to define a 9th!

There's a price for a great shoe sale

My mother told me so. Don't lift heavy things; you'll hurt your back. Well, I didn't really lift the furniture. I just pushed it around my living room. And I was careful.

Unfortunately, now I am on a muscle relaxer (which isn't all bad, by the way) and a painkiller. I was doing much better and could even sit up straight, but then I went to a shoe sale. Lalo (Designer Clearance House) got in a new shipment, and I spent two hours trying on shoes. The problem with this is that the place is more like a warehouse...no place to sit. So you are always bending over to find the shoes and balancing on one leg to try them on.

So now I am back in pain again. But worth it... I got a great pair of Olivia Rose Tal shoes for $62 (retail $275). I just can't tell my mother. They won't take the photo until everyone (up to eight people) are smiling. I hope the camera has better luck than I do or it could be a very long wait before the photo is snapped.

But now Sony has gone a step further... If little brother won't smile, that's OK the camera will put it there for you! In playback mode, you can add smiles to people using the camera´s face detection and retouch menu.

I just wish they had had this when my kiddos were little. Riding race horses is dangerous. I worry. I've resorted to calling her best friend (who lives in Florida) to call her fiance (who lives in New York) to call a trainer he knows at the same track to tell her to call her mother. This kind of thing has gone on for years.

But that's all over now. Text messaging! I sent her a test message just to see if she would answer. Magic! Five minutes later an answer. You're kidding.

A week later (I've been warned by other text messagers not to overdo it)I sent another message. Another answer....immediately. This is too much!

You're wondering... Why didn't you think of that before? I don't know. I've been paying for text messaging for a long time and never realized the power I had in my hands. I promise not to abuse this power.

A Recession with cream gravy

I went to a seminar on investment strategies this past weekend. My mother told me I should go because I "don't know much about business."

First, I was impressed that this many people have enough money to invest in a program like this! Of course, I've seen happier folks waiting in the emergency room at the county hospital.

What a great breakfast... eggs, biscuits & gravy, fruit, bacon, sweet rolls...yum! Now I'm ready to think about the Market. One more spoon of gravy & now we're ready.

Ah, a chart about the Recession of 2008. At least we're being honest now. And a summary of "Bubbles".. tech, silver, oil. Don't we ever learn?

And what did I learn? Really bad times and crazy good times never last indefinitely. We're probably not at the bottom yet but these times are also not as bad as many previous recessions (yet.. that's my note!)

I also learned that reducing oil consumption would help a lot, and a period of growth usually follows bad times. I learned to pay attention to value and not get carried away with bubbles. AND I learned that everything seems a lot better with hot biscuits and cream gravy with bits of sausage in it!

Do I look pale to you?

I'll never forget the day I got an invitation to join AARP. I was so offended! Why would they send that to me? I'm not old!

Well, today I got an even bigger jolt.... I came home to find a survey in my mailbox... from a funeral home! They want to know things like what kinds of services would be helpful to my family? Do I have a cemetary plot? Do I want to keep my family history on file with them?

I was tired over the weekend but I thought it was the heat. Maybe I look worse than I thought. Her aunt, Alma, works on movies and travels all kinds of places for movie sets. While working on War, she met and started dating Jeremy Conway. Jeremy has places in Manhatten and Fire Island. But here is the important part: Jeremy is the production designer of Sex and the City, the series and the movie. He has also won four Emmy Awards for his work on the Athens, Barcelona, Sydney and Atlanta Olympics.

In an interview for the Daily News, Jeremy said, "Carrie's apartment is not about Carrie," he says. "What she's wearing is where she spends her money, and her apartment is secondary to that. So we started 'flea-ing' and using found pieces she might reupholster."

I know this is a stretch but this is as close to the set of something like Sex and the City as I'll ever get. And if you squint, in the dark, from a distance, I look a little like Sarah Jessica on a bad day!

Wine at Last!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_q8lBV-IGhcM/SDOYQKKVfjI/AAAAAAAAACU/x6Pl6Q7ZV8A/s400/wine.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202669397916089906" />

Another big problem with shingles.... you can't drink wine with the medication. But I'm back! I opened two bottles that were recommended at Grapevine Market.

One was a Sauvignon Blanc called Kiwi Cuvee from France.... yes, France, not New Zealand. It was very good and under $10! I went back for more at this price. The other was a chardonnay from Burgundy, France, 2005 Bourgogne, Vincent Girardin. I don't care for oak and I loved this.

But hold on... now I want to find out about the cult following of Two Buck Chuck! Trader Joe's carries these $2 wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, White Zinfandel, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, and limited quantities of Pinot Grigio. These super-value wines began as the result of an oversupply of wine. According to Trader Joe's, "They’ve become the nation’s best-selling wines, not surprising when you consider the combination of low price ($1.99 - $3.49 per bottle, depending on the region)."

Now I can't testify if this stuff is drinkable, but if I can talk my son into putting a bottle in his luggage, I'll let you know. You see, there are lots of Trader Joe's in Phoenix where Scott lives, and he coming to visit in a couple of weeks. (No Trader Joe's in Texas.) Who knows, it won an award at the California State Fair!

More finds from Dale

Need an after five dress? It is usually around the waist and can be very painful. Even a light touch can be painful. This information is from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, but I could have told you the same thing from my experience this week. Over 50 percent of people in their 50s who have shingles develop postherpetic neuralgia (This means the pain stays after the shingles are gone.)

From the Mayo Clinic: The pain of shingles can be excruciating, and the cause might not be immediately evident. But once the telltale rash and blisters start on one side of your body, it's more easily identified as shingles.

Any one who has had chickenpox is at risk. There is a vaccine now but you should talk to your doctor about it because it is not for everyone. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/shingles/DS00098

I know I'm talking a lot about the pain but that's all I can think about right now. You can find info about symptoms, treatment, vaccine, etc at the Mayo Clinic Web site above. All I can think about is the pain part.

Exploring the "Local Flavors"

On the Pat's Picks Calendar there was an innocuous little item called "Homegrown Austin" at Grapevine Market. A "tasting event of local flavors." Lots of samples.

Hey, that's for me... samples! They have wines and a neat deli area, so after a glass of wine at home late Saturday afternoon, I set off to sample the local flavors! I didn't realize that there were only two flavors... vodka and rum.

I had no idea that Austin produced so much liquor. Oh, yum, mojitos made with Treaty Oak Platinum Rum. That is so tasty... sort of like a frisky fruit punch. OK, I'll try a tiny sip of Dripping Springs vodka. They need to turn the AC cooler in this place.

No more for me. But wait! Paula's Lemon Liqueur. That is really good.

Now I'm leaving... right past the dark chocolate flavored vodka. Dark chocolate? I love dark chocolate. And they serve half a piece of really great dark chocolate with the vodka so it's not like drinking on an empty stomach.

I'll bet that dark chocolate would be really good with the sample of Fall Creek Iconoclast.

P.S. I took a little nap at my sister's house before driving home.

Celebrate! At Dillard's. 6 pm. He is the Chief Creative Officer of Liz Claiborne. Yes, I've read his book and Nina Garcia's black book.

Back to the UT show.....evening wear, daywear, and bridal designs will be shown. These seniors have been working on their collections all semester and will have this opportunity to show them in a formal show to fashion industry standards.

A pre-show exposition will begin at 7 pm and will highlight programs and research activities. Each works great until a king size Snicker that was hiding in the fridge beneath a package of corn tortillas suddenly appears and silently screams, “Eat Me!” Like Alice in Wonderland, who couldn’t resist those same words, I eat.

Fortunately for Alice, eating the cake emblazoned with “Eat Me” only made her grow to be nine-feet tall. My lack of will power is making another part of my anatomy look at least nine-feet wide, even if it isn’t -- at least not yet.

My love affair with food didn’t begin until I stopped smoking. Quitting wasn’t easy. Like most quitters, I tried unsuccessfully to do so at least three times. My family, my doctor, my good sense all told me to quit, but I owe my 40 years of cigarette-free living to one thing -- jerky.

One day during hunting season, my father-in-law was making jerky. He carefully placed strips of soft red meat on trays which he put into a small smoke house.

When the meat came out it was dry, tough, leather-looking, but darn tasty. I took one look at that dark, dry, wrinkled jerky and thought, “That is exactly what my face is going to look like 10 years from now if I don’t stop “taking it to the smoke house.” I quit that same day.

Maybe I should buy a three-way mirror!

Who's that lady on the scaffolding?

If you saw Leah Strmiska at Northwest Hills Pharmacy working the register and helping customers, you'd never guess what she does in her off time. This petite, sweet woman climbs on ladders and scaffolding to paint murals, borders, and faux finishes on businesses and homes.

Her work can be seen in the entrance to the Stagecoach Inn in Salado, numerous homes on the homes tour, and, most recently, in the Symphony Showhouse Master Bedroom and Master Bath. She painted the beautiful faux finish in the bedroom and the vines on the ceiling; in the bath she used a gold leaf with amber wash..... and much of the time the work was done in near darkness.

With no electricity and many dark, rainy days, these fabulous free-hand works of art came to life with Leah's experienced hand rather than being able to see her work progress!

On a another note .....

Am I the only one who didn't know that the HEB/Central Market at 360 & Bee Caves had opened? I've been watching that spot for ages. Hurrah! An HEB/Central Market in Westlake.

It's an HEB but with a lot of things borrowed from Central Market, which means you can watch your sushi being rolled, but you can also find a full selection of toilet paper. There's a Cafe on the Run, fish market, deli, nice wine selection, and cooking demos. You can even find Rachal Ray serveware and the famous garbage bowl.

Tap, tap, tapping my way to a thinner me

I was so tired this Monday morning. I stayed up last night watching a new show (at least new to me)called I Can Make You Thin. Have you seen this? The idea is that people eat for reasons other than hunger; we often eat for emotional reasons.

A woman on the show headed for her stash of chocolate goodies every time she talked to her ex-husband and gained oodles of pounds. He had been having an affair with her sister-in-law. Please! Good riddance! But that's another show. Anyway, she tapped her way to a substantial weight loss.

You just use two fingers and tap on the acupuncture pressure points. I saw tapping on the cheek bone, forehead, chin, and collar bone. It is supposed to keep you from food cravings that result from emotional needs.

Every time she talked to her ex, she tapped him (& the chocolate goodies) out of her life. I've been tapping a lot today, but it's too soon to tell if it's going to come between me and my dark chocolate chips.

You know, chocolate (actually cocoa) got me through my Atkins phase. My daughter's boyfriend had to come over and remove all my carbs. He found me in the kitchen eating out of a can of Hershey's cocoa.

I'll let you know how it goes. But if you spot a woman driving around tapping on her check bones, do not become alarmed.

Spring renewal

On Easter I had lunch with my friend Eleanor and her family, including her 10-day old new granddaughter. I loved watching the new parents and hearing their plans for their new baby and new life.

I love spring because it is a time for renewal.... a time to clear out what you don't need anymore and look for new possibilities. Watching that tiny baby blink her eyes open to her new world reminds me that I, too, should stay open to new discoveries.

I hadn't kept up with Renee Trudeau since we worked together at health nonprofits many years ago. Friday night I was so-o-o tired that I decided to skip dinner and rest. When I pulled into the garage I spotted some logs that I bought a long time ago and had forgotten. Since this may be the last cold night for a while, with spring due to arrive any day, I should use those logs and create some atmosphere to boot.

Wouldn't that be wonderful.... a warm, crackling fire. Actually, I'm not sure I had ever started a fire. But how hard could it be; I have a gas starter. Check to make sure the flue is open. Put the logs in, add a little newspaper, and light the starter. Ah-h-h there..... the logs are starting to catch. I sit in my chair with a book I've been meaning to read. Any minute I will be warm and relaxed.

H-m-m it's a little smoky; I'l open the sliding glass door just to make sure the smell doesn't linger. That's better. H-m-m maybe I'd better fan the smoke to the door. OK the fire seems to be doing fine now.

H-r-r-r-ng!! Blang!! R-r-r-ing! Victoria ran to hide under the bed. She's never heard a smoke alarm, much less three going off at once. Stay calm. Open all the doors. Turn on the AC fan. Wow, it's a lot colder than I expected with all the doors open. Oh no, Victoria decided to make a run for the outside.

She's on her own now. I can't leave. I have to fan the smoke out before the sprinkler system comes on. There needs to be a button on the system that says "This is a mistake. I'm not really on fire. Don't spray me with water!"

Good girl, the alarms have stopped sounding. Now put out the fire and stop the smoking. I wish I had fireplace tools. You know, kitchen tongs and a butcher knife work just fine when you REALLY need to get logs outside quickly.

I think I'll just skip the wine and go to bed.

SIDECAR history

My friend Jane is a teacher. But not just any teacher. She knows, or will find out, anything! But she surprised me at a wedding reception when someone mentioned wanting a Sidecar cocktail. Jane said, "The Sidecar was created by a World War I officer to keep warm after riding in a sidecar." I asked her how she knew that. "I researched it." Jane always knows the history of anything!

From Wikipedia here's a recipe for a Sidecar:

One part brandy or Cognac
One part Cointreau
One part lemon juice
Preparation:
Mix the ingredients in a shaker half full of ice. Strain and serve in a sugar-rimmed glass. Garnish with a strip of lemon rind

More wineries, more good times

There are so many great wineries having fun events, and I know we won't be able to highlight very many in Pat's Picks, so I want to give you some Web sites to follow so you won't miss anything.

First, is the Web site for the Texas Hill Country Wineries. Check the "Winery Events" tab for a list of the events at the Hill Country wineries. Beautiful spring days, bluebonnets and great wines would make a perfect picnic, maybe listening to a band or just watching a spectacular sunset.

http://www.texaswinetrail.com/wevents.html

Another good Web site is by the Texas Department of Agriculture/Wine Division. Look at the "Find Texas Wines & Wineries" tab and I think you will be amazed at the number of Texas wineries..... 80 wineries!

http://www.gotexanwine.org/

So if we don't highlight your favorite winery, check these sites for all the spring activities.

How bad do you have to look?

I had planned to write about eye liner gel today, but something happened that takes priority.

I went out to the stable to walk and groom my ancient horse. I wore old, dirty, out-of-style clothes because you just don't want to know what gets on your clothes when you're grooming a horse. Not cute, casual clothes but stuff that belongs in the garbage. The hair is wind-blown and stringy by now.

On the way home, I decided to stop at Neiman's Last Call since I haven't stopped by in a long time. It's Sunday afternoon... who's going to be there?

Who knew that Neiman's celebrates President's Day in a big way! I saw three people that I know well and, at six feet or less, looking right at me, none of them recognized me! Just how bad do you have to look for your friends not to recognize you up close and personal?

I ducked behind a row of Dolce & Gabbana handbags. Pretended to try on a Ralph Lauren belt. Slinked behind the Missoni coats. There it was ... the cash register!

I just wanted to pay for my top and get out. But..... the cash register jammed and they had to call a supervisor to re-run the transaction. I told the cashier I didn't need a receipt; I promise not to return the top.

My "horsey" clothes are now in the garbage.

P.S. Eye liner gel is great because it doesn't fade easily but is not a hard line like liquid liner. BUT you must have the right brush! I was talked into a tiny (& cheap)brush that, with gel on it, becomes hard and sharp... sort of like poking your eyelid with a needle. Bobbie Brown has a brush that works great, and I'm sure there are others. It must have artificial bristles to hold the gel and be very flat. Mine has a rounded tip. I've heard that a slanted brush also works but I'm not taking any chances.

Everything (interesting) I know I learned from my hairdresser

I got my hair cut today! Sure, you're thinking, "So what," but Elizabeth always has interesting information that makes my life just a little bit better. She introduced me to the shimmer box. I love the shimmer box! Made by Bobbi Brown, it is part blush, part highlighter. You can use it over for your blush for a softer, more natural look or use it by itself.

She also told me about Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion that gives you an extra day without a shampoo.

Besides, Elizabeth thinks my hair color looks good the way it is...gray and all.... which means no dying, highlighting, etc. Saves time and $$$! By coincidence, I had just baked an olive oil cake when I read her article and thought I would share the (low calorie) recipe. It seems like I am posting a lot of recipes... and I don't really cook! For the olive oil you get at Bella Vista Ranch:

Lemon Olive Oil Cake
1-1/2 c. whole-grain pastry flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 salt
3 large eggs, separated
3/4 c. granular sugar substitute
1/2 c 1 percent or fat-free buttermilk
1/2 c extra virgin olive oil
2 tsp lemon extract
1 Tbl grated lemon zest

Heat oven to 350 F. It's about a woman who travels to Italy, India, and Indonesia on a journey to understand herself. I read so many self-help books that I could really understand this need!

Anyway, this means I will choose another book from my long list to read next. I have a stack of books that I bought thinking I would read immediately, but they are still waiting on the book shelf. I also keep an ongoing list in my cart on Amazon. Sometimes I even buy them and add them to the shelf! These are some of the titles I am considering:

1. One Year to an Organized Life
2. Helping Me Help Myself: One Skeptic, Ten Self-Help Gurus, and a Year on the Brink of the Comfort Zone
3. Paula Deen: It Ain't All About the Cooking
4. A Demon of Own Design
5. Four Blondes
6. In the Company of Cheerful Ladies

If you've read any of these and have advice about which would be the best bet, let me know!

I'm coming into port!

I noticed that several of the Texas wineries make nice Ports and I'm not sure many people notice them. I discovered Port when I took a chocolate and port pairing class with Mary Cech (The Wine Lover's Dessert Cookbook). What a class! But that's another story...

Anyway, pears and port make a fast, sophisticated dessert when you want to treat yourself or someone special. My favorite recipe comes from Bon Appetit:
1/4 c. lemon juice
8 large, firm but ripe pears
4 c. ruby port
2 c. sugar
15 1/8"slices ginger
2 cinnamon sticks
1 vanilla bean, split

Add lemon juice to bowl of cold water. Peel pears, leaving stems and remove core with melon baller through the bottom. Add pears to bowl of water.

Bring port, sugar, ginger, cinnamon, & vanilla bean to boil in heavy Dutch oven over high heat. Stir until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to medium-low & simmer syrup 10 minutes.

Drain pears & add to syrup. Simmer until tender, about 20 minutes. Remove pears & stand them upright. Boil syrup until reduced to 1-1/4 c. Pour over pears & chill. Got a little extra time? Serve with gingerbread and whipped cream!

Quick Version (from French Women Don't Get Fat).........
Bring 2 c. port & 1/2 c. sugar to a boil. Lower heat & simmer 5 minutes. Add 2 Tbsp lemon jiuce and 4 pears (peeled, cored, halved) Cook 10 minutes over medium-low heat. Cool & refrigerate. Ice cream?

Even if you don't drink port this is a great way to try those Texas ports!

Shoe sale!!

Time out from the wine discussion for a shoe sale! Karavel Shoes on Burnet Road is having a clearance sale in the discount store next to the main store. The discount store has shoes from last season that didn't sell in the main store. They are usually half price but this past Thurs-Sat they were reduced 75-80 %. And they are thinking about doing it again next Thurs- Sat. Check the paper or call (they are only open Thurs-Sat).

Prices range from $19.99 to $49.99 for shoes that retail for up to $260. I bought a pair of Italian sandals that retail for $255 for $49 and a pair of French comfort sandals that retail for $260 for $49. The Euro makes it almost impossible to buy these retail.

By the way, the French shoe is Arche. Comfort shoes with some style! They also carry lots of Soft, another great comfort shoe with style and most are $19 now.

Back to wine next week!

Save $1! Here's the blue cheese dip recipe

My sister bought the blue cheese dip recipe and shared it with me. She said she used a different kind of blue cheese and it came out stronger. I haven't tried it myself but I'll try to find the brand mentioned just in case.....

Pillar Bluff's Infamous Blue Cheese Dip

1 4-oz brick of blue cheese (i.e. Treasure Cave)
4-5 TBSPs olive oil
3-6 tsps dipping spices (I.e. Alessi)
cracked black pepper

Use a fork to mash the blue cheese while adding olive oil one tablespoon at a time. Add dipping spices to taste, and cracked black pepper, and mix into the cheese dip. Or, put all ingredients into a food processor and blend. For a creamier texture, add more olive oil.

Tip: For a taste sensation, use this dip as a topping to a grilled sirloin or venison burger. Or add to a baked potato or warm French bread. This tangy addition is an excellent compliment to our Pillar Bluff Boar Doe, Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot wine.

Tonight I learned how important it is to pair food with wine. I bought a bottle of Provencal at Becker Vineyards and it was good but not memorable. Well I had sushi tonight and saw that open bottle in the frig and thought I might as well try it with the sushi. Wow! What a difference. I loved it. Had two big glasses and had to take a nap!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://patspicksaustin.blogspot.com/2008/01/save-1-heres-blue-cheese-dip-recipe.html' title='Save $1! We went to 21 or 22 wineries... I think. All I know is that I came home with 17 bottles of delicious Texas wine.

We decided not to exchange gifts this year and do something together instead. And what says family better than drinking wine!

I didn't realize how many scenic wineries there were producing very nice wines. I'm finishing a bottle of Founder's Red from Pillar Bluff Vineyard in Lampasas right now. Yummy! Great drinking wine or for mulled wine. It's a little sweet, but not over the top. (I just can't do really sweet wines.) It was a cold, wet day and they served it mulled with cinnamon sticks. Ahhh, the aroma!

Two twin brothers own wineries right next door and produce small quantities of a surprisingly large variety of wines. The owner of Pillar Bluff says he planted five varietals just so he could produce the Boar Doe cab. Worth the effort! Also ask about the tasty bleu cheese dip recipe. (It'll cost you a $1)

There's a lot more wine to report... more later.

new blog

OK, I'm learning to blog.
